Donald Lee “Smitty” Schmidt, 79 passed away peacefully July 27, 2020, in Norman, Oklahoma. Smitty was born September 13, 1940, to Donald & Thelma Schmidt in Edmond, Oklahoma.
Smitty grew up in Edmond and graduated from Edmond high school in 1958 as a Student National Scholar. He later attended the University of Central Oklahoma and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Science and later completed his Master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in Electrical Engineering in 1985. He worked for the Oklahoma Postal Training Center for over 20 years and later found his passion as a Professor at OSU-OKC for over 25 years, where he taught thousands of students in Physics, Electrical Engineering, and Control Systems among other classes.
While his passion was teaching, his pride was his four children and his ten grandchildren. He loved music and all things, Engineering. He was dedicated to his 45 years of sobriety and committed to his program and helping others on their journey. Smitty was known for his fierce sense of humor and ability to make anyone laugh even at his own expense. We will miss this part of him the most!
Smitty was preceded in death by his father Don, mother Thelma, and sister Laura. He is survived by his sister Alta Turner and husband Rob; niece Paula Ballas; son Troy Schmidt and wife Karen; daughter Darcy Conant and husband Rod; daughter Holly Riley and partner Dustin; son Chad Schmidt and wife Lori; grandchildren, Troy Schmidt and wife Lindsay, Tracey Marshall and husband Cliff, Terry Schmidt, Zach Conant, and wife Lindsey, Lainey Conant, Ashleigh Heath, Kayley Schmidt, Jacob Conant, Mallory Schmidt, and Mackenzie Schmidt. He is also survived by his seven Great grandkids.
We will be celebrating his amazing life on Friday, July 31, 2020, at 2:00 p.m.
