David Lee Holcombe, 55, passed away suddenly in New Orleans, Louisiana on August 24, 2020. He was the son of Julianne and Burrel (Red) Fulcher. Also the deceased Donald Lee Holcombe. He was the oldest of 3 boys, being born on July 3rd (I tried to keep him in until the 4th), 1965. His brother Thomas was born March 5, 1968 and Robert was born April 27, 1973.
Although David was a native Texan, being born in Houston, the family moved to Alexandria, Louisiana when he was a month old and he lived there until 1978; when the family moved to Kingwood, Texas. He always had a deep love for Louisiana and upon graduating from High School was so excited to enroll in LSU to further his studies. He is and forever will be a fan of LSU football. He could quote their statistics for the past 20 years!! Geaux Tigers! His Dad is an Alabama fan, and his mother is an Ohio State fan; so it made for interesting comradery through the years.
As a young boy growing up in Alexandria, David loved playing outside in the swimming pool, in the bayou and their fort in the back yard. He loved fishing with his Dad and Granddads, learning to play the piano and “jammin’ with his friends. He spent his summers at Camp Arrowhead in Tuxedo, NC and with his “grannie and pawpaw” in the mountains of North GA.
Upon moving to Kingwood David took up the Saxophone and flute and was a member of the Kingwood High School Marching Band and their Jazz combo. He was on the debate team and, as we all knew, he had great debating skills. He and his friends loved going into Houston at night to go to jazz clubs, often in seedy, smokey and tiny venues, and sit-in with the musicians until the wee hours of the morning. David was a talented musician and played by ‘ear’. He played the saxophone, piano, drums and flute, but loved the piano the best.
David’s quest for knowledge and life experiences led him to LSU where he received a degree in mechanical engineering, then entry level jobs in the gas and oil industry. After a few years in the workforce, David went to Rice University in Houston, Texas and received his MBA. Later he was a certified CPA in the state of Texas. He spent 20 years as an Assistant Treasurer and Sr. Financial Analyst, including 5 years as an Environmental Engineer with various companies.
David loved traveling and meeting people all over the world. He visited all over Western Europe, several weeks in Russia (learned to speak Russian) and then 2 / 2 Thailand. From the start he loved Thailand and visited a couple of times and decided to live there for the past 6 years, visiting all over Thailand, Viet Nam and Cambodia. He finally returned to the US for good in June, 2020 and settled in New Orleans, his Jazz city!!
He was a unique gentleman and has maintained friendships with classmates and friends for year and years. He was very loyal and had a kind heart and nearly naïve trust and love for his fellow mankind and that was his greatest strength.
David was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist church, but as he aged he felt deeply in a Higher power and felt it through the wonders of nature and this world that was created. He especially was interested in Buddhism; as he said the people of Thailand were so peace loving and respectful of each other.
David is preceded in death by his Grandparents, Tom and Marjorie Holcombe, Desma and Harold Fulcher and Mary and Albert Krebs.
David is survived by his parents, Julianne and Burrel Fulcher, his brothers Thomas Holcombe and Robert Fulcher, his niece Ashton Holcombe and 3 grand nieces, Jessari, Briana and Aubriella, all living in Texas
