Roger B. Rector, age 87, passed away on September 5, 2020 in Houston, TX. Despite his long battle with COPD, Roger lived, spoke and acted like a man much younger than his years: still driving, meeting with friends, telling humorous stories, playing practical jokes and taking excellent care of his beloved wife Elizabeth.
Roger was born September 21, 1932 in Temple, TX to Thomas Joseph and Ruby Bess (Felts) Rector, but grew up in Waco, TX. He graduated from Waco High School in 1950, then attended Baylor University, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1954. He served three years in the United States Air Force as an Intercept Controller, earned the rank of 1st Lieutenant and was awarded the National Defense Service medal. He remained patriotic throughout his life, respected the flag and encouraged all to openly support their country.
He married Elizabeth M. Fischer on January 14, 1956 in Houston, TX and was blessed with four children. He was very active in his children’s lives, volunteered in Boy Scouts, and coached baseball and softball teams.
Roger worked as a salesman for Hallmark Cards for 5 years and then for H.W. Gossard for 15 years as a lingerie salesman. For the next 30 years he worked independently as a manufacturers’ representative selling lingerie and loungewear until his retirement at the age of 73.
He spent his retirement years reading, playing golf and poker, enjoying time with friends and family, and giving back to the community. He read weekly to others at their retirement home and organized monthly food and snack collections for Mission of Yahweh, a local women’s shelter.
Beginning in his 80’s, Roger fulfilled his life-long dream of writing. He wrote and self-published four books: two action books entitled Brig and Brig is Back, one children’s book called How the Animals Found Out and finally his own memoir: Slips are Up, Panties are Down, Bras are Holding Their Own, Memoirs of a Lingerie Salesman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jake Lee Rector, and his son Brian Thomas Rector. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Rector, his son Craig Rector and daughter-in-law Lisa Rector, his son Lee Rector and daughter-in-law Dana Rector, his daughter Karen Rector Guidry and son-in-law Todd Guidry, and grandchildren Aaron Rector, Lauren Rector, Mitchell Rector, Alicia Rector, Cassie Guidry, Brennan Guidry and Andrew Guidry.
In lieu of flowers, we request that donations be made to Mission of Yahweh and Wounded Warrior Project.
