She was born November 1, 1932, the sixth child of Timothy Wesley Farris and Cleader Virginia Petty Farris of Junction City, Arkansas. She graduated in 1950 from Junction City High School where she was on the girls’ basketball team and excelled in secretarial classes and their competitions. Sara worked in El Dorado as a bookkeeper for Griffin Auto and later for the Volkswagen dealership, O’Neil Motors.
On March 30, 1962, she married Frank Alan Herring of Strong, Arkansas. The family grew with the births of three sons joining their excited sister Donna. Sara’s tireless efforts to provide good meals for the family and maintain a well-ordered, clean home are hallmarks of home to her children. The Herrings made their home in El Dorado for 40 years where they raised their family. They were active in Marrable Hill Chapel and later St. Paul United Methodist Church. Once the children were grown, Sara and Alan enjoyed travels to Germany and Hawaii.
They moved to Bryant, Arkansas, in 2001 where they joined First United Methodist Church of Bryant. The Herrings have resided at Mt. Carmel Community in Benton, AR, since October 2015.
Survivors include her husband Alan; one daughter, Donna (Rick) Shell of Marble Hill, MO; three sons: Mark Alan (Ginie) Herring of Bryant, AR; David Brent Herring of Little Rock, AR; and Lt. Col (retired Army) Michael Kent (the late Kana) Herring of Camp Zama, Japan. Six grandchildren: Jane (Keith) Budnick of Wildwood, MO; Meredith (Austin) Powell of Bryant, AR; Lindsay (Will) Adams of Sullivan, IN; Ben (Tara) Shell of Ballwin, MO; and Kira and Kora Herring of Japan. Eight great-grandchildren: Lauren, McKenna, Nolan, and Ozzy Budnick of Wildwood, MO; Harlyn Powell of Bryant, AR; and Allen and Theo Adams of Sullivan, IN, with Matthias Adams due this month. Survivors also include one sister Bobbie Faye Owen of Columbia, MO, and one brother Ray Farris of Soddy Daisy, TN, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Roy Farris and T.W. Farris; and sisters Ferne Farris, Ruth Salotti, Nan Foyil, and Joan Thomas.
Visitation will be Wednesday 1:00 pm at Young’s Funeral Directors Chapel. Services to follow Wednesday 2:00 pm officiated by Dr. Benjy McCann. Burial will follow at Strong Cemetery under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors.
