Mrs. Brenda Starr Teague Kiser passed beautifully into Heaven from her home on Wednesday, September 9, 2020. She joined her precious daughter, Jennifer Lynn Butler Cox, whom she had been eager to see for 25 years. Brenda was 73 years old. Loving her and caring for her all the way were her husband, Thomas Kiser, daughter, Angie Ruppard (Tony) of Hudson, and four granddaughters, Taylor Cox of Asheville, Hayley Rawls (Travis) of Taylorsville, Sara Beth Crow (Kyle) of Lenoir, Anna Lee Ruppard of Hudson and a brother, Reggie Teague (Sarah) of Concord. The love surrounding her was simply an extension of the love she had given while being a wife and raising her children and grandchildren
Brenda and her family were also supported by countless friends, extended family members and a Hospice team that made it possible to fulfill her wish of staying home.
Brenda was born March 19, 1947 in Caldwell County to the late Ferne Bush Query and the late James Columbus Teague. She grew up in Hudson, North Carolina where she was raised by her grandparents, Belk and Lossie Bush. She enjoyed small town agricultural living where everyone takes care of each other and seeks to meet the needs another may have. Those values motivated everything she did and thought. To this day, some of her closest friends are the cousins she grew up with and her childhood friends and classmates from Hudson High.
Brenda gave her whole heart and life to Jesus in her early twenties and she raised her sweet girls to know the importance of loving Jesus, too. She was a beautiful example of His great love, generosity and care. More than one person can say, “Brenda tucked a $20 or a $100 in my hand because she knew I had a need.” It was so much more important that others had what they needed than for her to keep something for herself. But beyond money, Brenda also knew the need someone may have was for a smile, a listening ear, a kind word or even something silly to lighten the load of life.
Brenda used her time, talent and gifts to add joy and beauty to life. Her desire to learn and sense of adventure were endless. She enjoyed playing the piano, photography, painting, gardening and clogging. She loved bluegrass, picking the banjo or playing her fiddle with the Hardee’s gang on Wednesday mornings. Brenda won WILLY awards with Foothills Performing Arts for her portrayals of Ms. Maudie in “To Kill a Mockingbird”and Ethel Savage in “Miss Savage”. She had a General Contractor’s license, a Realtor’s license and most recently used her Massage Therapy license to give people a gentle touch and reminder of the healing that is possible when we care for others. If there was something Brenda wanted to do, she did it.
Brenda’s life with her husband Tom was full as well. They enjoyed camping, family beach trips and taking long rides. Together, they had a booming craft business back in the 1980’s and 1990’s going to festivals all across the state with their woodworking and hand painted designs.
Brenda’s professional life was equally rewarding as a Legal Secretary and then Real Estate Researcher for almost 50 years with the same firm, Carpenter, Bost and Cartee. She was revered and sought after in the legal community for her expertise. Her work gave her dear friends in the Court House, Register of Deeds, Tax Office and Tax Mapping. Those friendships there were a treasure to her.
Brenda also enjoyed over 50 years as an active member of Community Baptist Church in Whitnel where she played the organ, was a church secretary and supported a variety of youth plays and programs. She was precious to her church family and loved each one as exactly that, family.
Without a doubt, Brenda lived life full of color, full of adventure and full of love. She will be missed, but the touches she left on each of our lives will be a sweet reminder of how truly special she was.
A memorial service to honor Brenda’s life will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2020 at Community Baptist Church in Lenoir at 2:00 pm with Rev Waitsel Beard officiating.
