Hollie Ben Young was born on May 22, 1928 in Rosedale, Mississippi. Hollie was a loving mother of three children and a devoted wife of Kokyou (Mike) Young for 66 years before he passed in 2019. She was preceded in death by her parents, Susie Chung Wong and Ben Kee Wong.
She is survived by her daughters, Jeanette Y. Bocell and her husband, Dr. James (Jim) Bocell, Debbi Mulcahy and her husband Mark. Hollie is survived by a sister, Susie Gee, and her brother-in-law Hank Lee, numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Hollie and Mike were grocery store owners since 1953. They moved near the Houston ship channel where they had a thriving grocery store for 37 years. They retired from the store in 1995 to take care of their only grandchild at the time. Hollie was also a homemaker along with her many other talents in life. She was a baker, seamstress, and she knew how to crochet and knit. Her baking skills were more to satisfy her own sweet tooth.
Hollie was not an outdoorswoman like her husband Mike, but eventually she and Mike would become the “power couple” of Galveston pier, where they were members for many years.
Mom is loved and will be missed by many. God bless her soul.
Mom, Jim and I would like to give special thanks to our friend and Mom’s caregiver, Alba Benitez. Mom was happiest when Alba was around. In addition, we would like to thank Dr. Kew for taking care of Mom’s mental health and Dr. Muntz who took care of her physical health.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.brooksidefuneralhomelauder.com for the Young family.
A wife, a mother, a grandma too, this is the legacy we have from you.
You taught us love and how to fight, you gave us strength, you gave us might.
A stronger person would be hard to find, and in your heart, you were always kind.
You fought for us all in one way or another, not just as a Wife not just as a Mother.
For all of us you gave your best, now the time has come for you to rest.
So go in peace, you've earned your sleep, your love in our hearts, we'll eternally keep.
