Theone Poole was raised by her mother, Edna Keifer and her grandmother, Anna Recheir. They survived the depression and they survived the war. They were survivors. Her grandmother was her idol and she always told us she wanted to live into her nineties, just like her grandmother. When she passed at 95, she had achieved that wish.
Theone earned a scholarship to Tulane University when she graduated valedictorian from John McDonogh High School. It was definitely the road not taken in her life. Her grandmother told her that she needed to work to help support the family, so she went to business school and became a comptometrist. She worked in the accounting department at Maison Blanche until her marriage. She always told us that it was one of the happiest times of her life.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Jesse, mother, Edna, grandmother, Anna, oldest son, James, oldest daughter, Jude, and youngest great-grandchild, Ethan. She is survived by her sons, Jesse and Richard (Debbie), daughters, Anne and Mary, 7 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
In the 39 years since her husband’s death, Theone spread her wings. For years, she enjoyed her coffee clubs and she was a fixture at Maison Blanche until its closure. She loved to read and talk. She eventually started working for her twin daughters. Until dementia claimed her health, she enjoyed answering the phone and greeting clients. She loved people.
She cared for her mother, grandmother, and mother-in-Law during their final illnesses. She was blessed to receive wonderful care when dementia left her debilitated. We are grateful for the care she received from the three caregivers who were with her the longest, Anna, Joel, and Jocelyn. We are also thankful for the staff at Home Instead who not only sent us a wonderful knowledgeable caregiver but also helped us re-establish her hospice care before she passed.
Mom was blessed to enjoy a life free of any major illness. Yes, dementia eventually took her, but she lived a long life and was a prime example of someone who enjoyed all the small things that life has to offer.
The night before she died, she told us her mother was coming for her. We would like to think that her son James and daughter Jude accompanied their grandmother to pick up mother and escort her to Heaven. We can only imagine her happiness in seeing her other children again.
Her mother named her appropriately; there was only one person like her.
