I came to know Dan (Big Mac) in 1970 at Illinois State Univ. We both lived in the Manchester dorm on campus and immediately became friends.  I only went the one year but we kept up for a while.  Dan was the biggest, gentlest soul I had ever met.   I always enjoyed my time with him.  

In the summer of 1971, we got our draft numbers for 'Nam and he, John Kendall and I all got lower than 69. John wanted to hitchhike to Bermuda incase one or more of us had to go to 'Nam.  We didn't discuss how we were going to deal with the last leg, but off we went.  We got as far GA before we stalled out and had to come home. 

I was so sorry to hear of Mac's passing.  We reconnected not long before on FB.  He was the kind of man that other men, like me, can only aspire to be like.  I finally found this photo (recent move, everything is still lost...) and wanted to share it with the family.  

My condolences

    I am so sorry upon hearing of Dan's passing, of which I just learned.  Dan was most helpful in every class he conducted at Hanover Township.  Then he was so kind in setting aside time to meet with me when I developed a website dedicated to help our Veterans.  He also helped via email, answering any questions I had.
    We Seniors and Hanover Township were so fortunate to have someone as intelligent as Dan, so helpful, and with a pleasant personality and sense of humor.
    He is already missed upon hearing this.  
    I am sure there are many fond memories in the family, and may those continue to comfort you.

I’ve spent the time since watching the service remembering my dear friends, looking at the video tribute again, viewing the pictures and yes, shedding a tear or two. No one said life was fair and the person who said that first was correct!  I’m just so blessed that the Dermott/Kupkowski/Roberts families have been a part of my life!  I wish you all the best and may your hearts be filled with wonderful memories!

So sorry about Dan's passing.  As so many have said, he was such a nice man with a ready smile for everyone.  And no one who met him could ever doubt the huge love he had for his family.

I always looked up to you, Dan, because you stood a foot taller than I did but mostly because you were kind, encouraging and every cell in your body loved life and the people in it.
Dan, your love for others, your positive outlook and your wonderful bear hugs made my life oh so much better.
The past 6 months were difficult for you but you kept your dream to return home alive through it all.  I will forever cherish our conversations during those months. I will miss your greeting "Hi Sweetie!" even though I know I wasn't the only female who heard that from you.  Your pain is over and we will see each other again.  I love you, your sister Nancy

Dear Kupkowski Family,

Thank you for posting all of these wonderful pictures of Dan and allowing those who knew him to leave kind words. One of my favorite memories of Dan is when the senior center got new carpeting and all the staff had to move their office into the activity room, so we all worked side by side. Throughout the week we got to enjoy Dans whistling! Dan worked with his headphones in and was no stranger to sing and whistle out loud to his tunes. I remember sitting there smiling, and this was just one instance of Dan giving someone a reason to smile. He was an incredibly kind, thoughtful and kindred soul at the senior center. He is deeply missed and is a person whose memory will live on and be treasured by many.

My deep condolences to Dan's family.  I hope the memories he left will be a comfort.
Dan helped me with a project that was dear to me.  I wanted to write a book about my family and the childhood memories to share with the youngsters.  He helped me from start to finish.  I had a book for all my nieces.  They loved it.

Thank you Dan for being a sweet, kind soul.

 Dan was such a caring outgoing person! He always had time to help anyone.
He was a fantastic resource for the entire senior center and township. If he didn’t have an immediate answer to your inquiry, it would be answered pronto!
I knew Dan from  day one and would talk with him every week. He was truly a man for all seasons. He had a mighty wealth of knowledge he shared with the community. Dan will be greatly missed! We were friends with many common interests. He was the go to point person for technology.
I know he his up there in the “cloud” smiling at us with that big grin! 
My condolences to Dan’s family and friends.  He truly loved helping his fellow man.



There are no words to express the sadness of losing this wonderful man, a loving husband, devoted father, and true friend.   And the way he makes  everyone laugh, even still today through loving memories!

We will miss Dan greatly. Nobody could tell a better joke than Dan. I will always cherish the times he made us smile and laugh. He really enjoyed his life with Betsy and family.  Love you and you are in my prayers.

Dear Kupkowski family, I was deeply sad to hear about Dan's death; I have such wonderful memories of Dan. I took several computer classes with Dan at the Senior Center; he always amazed me with how huge his knowledge was on tech  "stuff" and on many, many other subjects. He took the time to answer my questions outside of class, which was very helpful.
His classes were always interesting and fun, never ever boring. Dan will be missed.
