She was born on February 8th, 1940 in Terre Haute, Indiana and was the first of ten children to William & Doris Hatcher. Margaret graduated from Paul C. Schulte High School in 1958 and earned a B.S. in Home Economics from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in 1963 and became a Registered Dietician. After graduation, she accepted a commission in the US Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. She was stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. where she evaluated menus and provided nutritional guidance for soldiers. On September 1st, 1964, while stationed in Washington D.C., Margaret married her husband of 21 years, Fred O. Wier Sr.
Margaret and Fred created their first home in Arlington, Virginia where they began raising their three children. She was an outstanding mother. She stayed home to raise her young children and was a magnificent cook, assisting her husband in standardizing the recipes for his restaurant, developing her own recipes and creating intricate hand work as a seamstress. She also enjoyed reading (especially Georgette Heyer novels), gardening, and many other activities. Margaret went back to college in Virginia to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. The family moved to Austin, Texas in 1978 and purchased a ranch in Kimble County near the town of Harper, Texas six months later. Margaret loved her life on the ranch. She grew vegetables and flowers in her large garden, raised goats, cattle, hogs, chickens, ducks, geese, and a couple of horses. Margaret was a great lover of all animals, but especially loved dogs. She was seldom without a dog and a few cats by her side. Margaret worked as a nurse at Fredericksburg Hospital. When her husband’s health began to decline, the family moved to Georgetown, TX to be closer to medical facilities. She opened the Hobbit House Daycare Center in Georgetown, which operated for a few years but she ultimately went back to nursing before retiring to her gardening, art collecting, and adoring her precious grandchildren who brought her so much joy.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers Joseph Hatcher, William Hatcher, and her sister Catherine Hatcher.
Margaret is survived by her daughters Elnora Robinson, Jenny Drozynski, and son Fred Wier Jr.; brother Hank Hatcher; sisters Rosemary Wiggins, Delores Case, Cecilia Hatcher, Mary Hatcher, and Diane Larsen, and Sister-in-Law, Judy Hatcher as well as many nieces and nephews. Her grandchildren, Claire Barry, Jake Dimmitt, Sam Dimmitt, Thomas Dimmitt, Emily Drozynski, Lily Drozynski, and great-granddaughter Avery Jane Barry.
We want to especially thank Margaret’s caring neighbors, Susan Wukasch and Gary Richter who kept a close watch on her as her health and independence was in decline. We also want to thank her nursing staff, Theresa, Cindy & Elizabeth and especially the Certified Nursing Assistants who tended her needs each and every day at The Springs Healthcare & Rehabilitation.
Special thanks to Father Henry Finch at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Cedar Park not only for performing Last Rites, but for overcoming the obstacles of COVID-19 restrictions in order to minister to Grammy.
Upon her wishes, Margaret will be cremated and did not want funeral services.
