Irene Helen Werther, 94, of Sloatsburg, New York, died Monday, October 12th peacefully at her home. She was born April 2nd, 1926 in the Town of Tuxedo, New York, to the late Anna Bishko and Michael Wassell. She grew up in Tuxedo where her parents served the Curtis family.
Irene was a graduate of George F. Baker High School in Tuxedo. She was a bookkeeper and general manager of Hugo's Chevrolet in Sloatsburg, NY, for 25 years, She eventually retired as a secretary for Bennett Brothers in Mahwah, New Jersey.
Irene was married to her husband the late Egon Werther in 1953. They had one daughter, Margaret Werther Badger who also predeceased her.
She enjoyed many years of singing in the choir at St. Joan of Arc Church in Sloatsburg and taking trips with the local senior clubs and the Mahwah Elks. She was also very involved in decorating the church and Mahwah Elks for all of their activities and holidays.
Irene is survived by her two nieces, Mary Wassell Stowe and husband Glenn of Charlotte, NC, and Christine Wassell Blackman and husband Patrick of Pownal, VT, and also two nephews, Michael Wassell and wife Wren of Chesapeake, VA, and Richard Wassell and wife Dianna of Portsmouth, VA, and longtime friends, whom she considered family, Jean Higinson and Patricia Marsh and their families and many great-nephews and nieces.
