A los 8 años se mudo con su abuela materna crucita, a nueva york, aprendiendo el idioma inglés. Regresa a puerto rico y trabajaba ayudando a su mamá doña tete, a preparar las frituras y a venderla. Se iba caminando desde la calle calma, hasta la plaza del mercado de la parada 19, lo que ahora es la plazita. Cojia lo que los plazeros descartaban porque no podían vender y ella le pedía permiso y con un cuchillo le quitaba las partes malas y preparaba sus frituras. También hacía para la venta dulce de coco, bizcocho de maíz y arroz con dulce. Así comenzaron sus primeros negocios.
Conoció a Jimmy, quien era un músico, con quien procreó a su primogénito Martín.
Su espíritu samaritano la llevó a estudiar enfermería práctica y no pudo culminar su sueño de ser enfermera debido a sus obligaciones maternales. Ella fue parte del tema que asistió al gigante de Carolina. Siempre busco la manera de ayudar y sacar adelante a su familia, en especial a sus hijos.
Se hizo hípica por su suegra Doña Vicky, quien la mandó a jugar una papeleta de caballo dejándole saber que ella jugara los números que ella quisiera, iniciando allí su pasión por el hipismo. Le encantaba jugar bingo, lo cual aun jugaba con sus amistades y su hija evelyn, todos los domingos.
En 1959 nació su segundo hijo Edgar. Que lo procreó con Julián. Luego conoció el amor de su vida don cuba, quien la ayudó con la crianza de martín y Edgar. Procrearon 5 hijos: Evelyn, Junito, Javy, Wanda y Mary.
Una noche encontró una pareja durmiendo en una escalera arropandose con periódicos y tratando de mantener a su bebé caliente. Ella les ofreció cuidar del pequeño Héctor, lo cuido hasta que su mamá, se rehabilito y pudo volver a cuidar de su hijo 2 años más tarde.
Xiomara, la linda indiecita, que fue criada por Mai, ya que su verdadera mamá, estaba sufriendo de depresión post parto. Nuestra querida hermanita, falleció a la tierna edad de 2 ½ luego de un episodio de sickle cell.
Su habilidad de hacer que la gente se chupara los dedos con cualquier cosa que cocinara con su sazón y sabor natural, la ayudó junto con Don Cuba, su esposo, a reunir suficiente dinero para construir una casa y mudar a su familia para disfrutar una vida mejor. Vendiendo frituras desde el balcón de su apartamento en el caserío hasta empezar su primer negocio “Colmado Santa Clara”, donde su vieja clientela la siguieron buscando sus alcapurrias, rellenos, pasteles, sancocho, entre otras cosas y su famoso juguito de china Puritán.
Después del fallecimiento de su adorado esposo Don Cuba, continuó con su negocio unos cuantos años hasta que se retiró para disfrutar de su familia, sus caballos, y bingo, sin embargo nunca pudo retirarse completamente de la cocina porque sus clientes seguían buscando sus pasteles y alcapurrias.
La generación de hijos y nietos que tuvo son:
· Martín – su nieto, Manolito
· Edgar – su nieto, Edgardito y Jeniffer
· Evelyn – sus primeros nietos, Willito, Bebé y Johana
· Junito – sus nietos, Pamela, Negri, Jean Carlos, Christian, James, Ricardo, Janiel y Enjda
· Javy – sus nietos, Javielito y Gerardo
· Wanda – sus nieta, Shanice
· Mary – sus nietas, Kaisa y Kisai
De los cuales ahora tiene 24 bisnietos y 1 tataranieta
Desde su primera casa hasta su última casa se mantuvo trabajando en remodelación de sus casas, haciendo proyectos. Le encantaba la unión familiar y celebrar a su familia, amigos y seres queridos. Su tradicional fiesta de noche buena no podía faltar, creando un ambiente festivo en su casa de alegría. No podía faltar sus tradicionales pasteles, arroz con dulce, el ponche (coquito), el pernil con su rico cuerito “volao”.
Su cantante favorito, con el que se crió fue, Ismael Rivera. Su canción favorita fue, Oriza.
Disfrutó su vida compartiendo mucho con su familia, saliendo de crucero, jugando en los casinos, saliendo a comer, haciendo travesuras cuando se desaparecía a Mary porque encontraba una agencia hípica. Su misión y legado era que siempre fuera una fiesta y que su familia siempre estuviesen juntos unidos compartiendo en una fiesta.
