She was educated at Bruce Monroe Elementary School, Benjamin Banneker Junior High School, Dunbar Senior High School, and the Margaret Washington School of Nursing. Early in life she developed heart problems which interrupted her primary schooling years, however, at the age of 50 Dolly returned to school determined to achieve her goal of receiving her general equivalency degree and successfully graduated at the top of her class from the Armstrong Adult Education Center.
Dolly continued her education by attending the University of the District of Columbia and Howard University in the area of psychology.

At age 21, LaVerne gave birth to Melitta Trudy Djate, her only child. Dolly fell in love and married James Edward Banks a few years later at the age of 24. Some of her favorite hobbies included poetry, dancing, ice skating and listening to music.
