Joan was born April 14,1931 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to Elizabeth and Harry Huether. She was the youngest of seven children.
After graduating from Cass Tech High School in Detroit, Joan attended Wayne State University earning a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology. She received her Masters of Social Work from Michigan State University in 1982.
Joan married F. Merrill Wyble on August 11,1954 in Germany. Together they raised six children. On August 18,1985, Joan married Reverend Robert F. Mayer and was blessed with four step children. Joan lovingly bragged about having 10 children.
Joan’s passion in life was caring for others, as evident in her six children, step-children, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and work as a social worker. In her younger years she volunteered at the kids’ schools, and St. Lawrence Auxiliary League. She was involved in several bridge club groups and a member of Beta Sigma Phi for 20 years. Throughout her life Joan was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Lansing, MI, First Lutheran Church in Helena, MT and for the past 25 years at Martin Luther Chapel in East Lansing, MI.
She enjoyed cooking and baking and was famous for her homemade hot fudge sauce, ice cream cake roll, lasagna, and an endless supply of chocolate chip cookies. She also enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, hiking and traveling. Joan fought a 15 year battle with Alzheimer’s and through it all maintained her love of life and others. Joan was accepting and welcoming to anyone and everyone and opened her heart and home to all.
Joan is survived by her husband of 35 years, Robert F. Mayer; Her children: Beth (Frank) Gregg of Boonville, IN; Rick Wyble of Grand Rapids, MI; Laurey Wyble of Lansing, MI; Randy (Laura) Wyble of Lansing, MI; Nancy (Michael) Vance of Fenton, MI; Robert (Becky) Wyble of Fenton, MI; and Jenna (Bret) Marr of Okemos, MI. Her step-children Bill (Kathy) Mayer, Margaret (Bob) Zancanella, Elizabeth (David) Mestelle. and Julia Mayer. Joan was loved and adored by her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Gerald Saville.
Joan is predeceased by her first husband, F. Merrill Wyble, grandson Zane Gregg and siblings Marietta Moffitt, Harry Huether, Robert Huether, Clyde Huether and Elizabeth Pillar.
Joan’s life will be celebrated in a private service at Deepdale Memorial Gardens presided by Pastor Dave Dressel of Martin Luther Chapel.
