Dorothy Ann (Tomlin) Birkevaag – 87, of Scituate, formerly of Ridgefield, New Jersey passed away peacefully on the morning of Wednesday, November 18, 2020. She was the beloved wife of Carl D. Birkevaag, with whom she shared nearly 67 years of marriage.
Born on August 24, 1933 in Jersey City, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Jeff and Gizella (Zeaman) Tomlin. She was a 1950 graduate of Cliffside Park High School in New Jersey.
My mom always said that life was never easy. It figured that she should know that, growing up during the Great Depression and World War II, however, her greatest test came when she fell in love with my dad, a Protestant. My mom was Catholic. They could not get married in her church, but that didn’t bother her. They were both Christians and raised their children in the Protestant Church where she enjoyed singing for many years in the choir. She taught us to be generous, humble, kind and tolerant. Even though she only had a high school education, she believed one should get as much education as possible. She always supported my sister and me every step of the way with our education. That didn’t mean we couldn’t have fun. She would often take us to the Palisades Amusement Park, concerts and plays. She was a staunch Republican who loved to garden. She loved animals, especially her dogs. Her favorite breed was Golden Retrievers. She loved to travel and some of her favorite trips were with Barbara to Las Vegas. She also loved the beach. We could always count on Mom to be there. I’m just glad I got to be there for her, and I hope I always made her proud.
She was the devoted mother of David Birkevaag and his wife Mary of Scituate and the late Barbara Birkevaag. Cherished “Grandmother” of Jennifer Birkevaag of Scituate, MA.
Loving sister of Richard Tomlin and his wife Jean of Ponce Inlet, FL and Henry Tomlin of Petersburg, VA. Dear aunt of Pam Luzi and Scott Tomlin.
Funeral services will be held privately. She will be laid to rest in Ridgefield Cemetery in New Jersey.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 309 Waverley Oaks Rd, Waltham, MA 02452 or Scituate Animal Shelter, 780 Chief Justice Cushing Hwy, Scituate, MA 02066.
