Dr. George Karagiannis was born In Skoura, Lakonia, Greece on September 23, 1953. He was the only son of Christos Georgiou Karagiannis, a stone mason from Lagadia, Arcadia and Paraskevi Karagiannis (nee Matheos). George and his parents left Greece in 1958 and immigrated to Montréal, Canada for a better future. There, he attended Socrates School and later Outremont High School. In 1969, George and his parents left Canada to escape the bitter cold and joined his mother’s family in Freeport, Long Island. George never forgot Montréal and was perhaps one of the Montréal Canadian‘s greatest and most loyal fans amongst a sea of Islanders.
George was a bright and very studious boy. He attended Freeport High and in 1972 he was accepted to Temple University in Pennsylvania where he embarked on the long hard journey studying first pre medical studies, and in 1977 attended Medical School at the University of Athens. Returning to the USA with his medical degree, he completed his residency at Stony Brook University Hospital/ Northport VA in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, George treated hundred and hundreds of patients over his 30+ years at several different hospitals and at his Long Island private practice in Plainview. With his extremely caring, and attentive nature, Dr. George as he was known, had one of the best bedside manners and has touched the hearts of many people as well as being a excellent diagnostician. He always went beyond the call of duty and passionately took care of his patients.
In 1988, George married his love, and equally big hearted Greek Long Island girl, Maria Drakos and had their beautiful family, twins, Christos and Pariskevi (Alexandros) and their youngest, Jerry. He was blessed to witness and guide the making of a second Dr. Karagiannis (Kekatos), his daughter, and watch both of his sons achieve many great things in life. He was blessed to see his first grandchild, Dionisios and also learned that his second grandchild, a little girl, is on her way.
May God rest his beautiful soul and may his memory be eternal.
