Sadly, our dad Barney Kiyoshi Sugiyama passed away on December 8th 2020 in the care of Fellburn Care Center at the age of 91. He was born on October 17, 1929 to parents Tsunekichi and Yasuko Sugiyama in Vancouver.
He attended UBC, later moving to Indiana to finish his degree as a chemical engineer while working part time polishing cars at a dealership. While in Indiana he met his wife Betty. They had 2 children Tom & Linda. After they were married, they moved to Prince Rupert where they both worked for The Columbia Cellulose Company. In the mid 60's the company moved them to Vancouver, where they would stay for the remainder of their years. In the mid 70's the company closed down and Barney went to work for and managed Fukuyama-Sugiyama fish plant.
He loved vacationing in Hawaii and L.A., often bringing a niece or nephew along. He always took pride in helping his family. His love for a perfect green lawn was a passion that never went away, so much so that in later years he even took care of his neighbours yards. Barney is survived by son Tom, daughter Michelle, son in law John and grandchildren Kiera, Antonio, Biagio and Kalea. He was predeceased by his parents Tsunekichi & Yasuko, wife Betty, daughter Linda, brothers Yoshio, Mitsuo, Haruo, Yukio, Isamu and sister Jean.
