She was born November 22, 1957 in Elgin to Charles and Patricia (Guerra) Porter. Born at only 2 pounds 6 ounces, she was a fighter from the start. On October 14, 2006 she married the love of her life, Joseph Zawistowski after a 20-year courtship.
Sandy is survived by her husband, Joe; her children, Rachel (Chris) Haynes, Christina (Scott) Hayes, Sarah (Jim) Johnson; her mother, Pat Miller; her grandchildren, Cole, Parker, Carlee, Kaileigh; her siblings, Colette (Todd) Vanderkin and Jeff (Melissa) Porter; and many extended family members.
Sandy was preceded in death by her beloved father, Chuck; grandmothers Alice Guerra and Gladys Porter; and aunt Anna Long.
Sandy worked as a paraprofessional at McHenry Middle School prior to retirement. She enjoyed music, crafting, traveling, spending time with family, and spending summers at Fish Lake Beach in Volo. Sandy was known for her positivity and kindness and has been referred to as “a ray of light”. She touched many lives and will always be remembered as a sweetheart, a wonderful mother and grandmother, and a beautiful and caring person who put everyone’s needs above her own. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
There will be a walk-through visitation from 4 to 6pm on Monday, December 28 at Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home, 500 W. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake. We ask that you make your time here brief so all may have the chance to pay their respects. Facial coverings and social distancing will be required.
