San Diego – Mary Agnes Giacalone, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, passed away peacefully, Friday, December 18th.
Mary loved family, friends, bridge, the Padres, line dancing, Sicilian food, family picnics and New Year’s Eve parties. She delighted family with her baked goods: amazing cream pies, 3 layer ricotta cake, Italian Easter egg cookies (Buba cu l’ova), fig filled Christmas cookies and cannoli. She taught 2 generations and many friends the secrets of Sicilian cannoli making. Mary was known for her crocheting skills, taught to her by her maternal grandmother, Mary, at a very young age. She used these skills well into her 80’s making beautiful afghans for her 4 children and 8 grandchildren. Over the years, many of her afghans were donated to Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church Spaghetti Night Dinner for fundraising.
Mary is survived by her children – Angela (Frank), Guy Anthony (Rosemarie), Michael (Marilyn), Marguerite (Tom). Grandchildren – Frank, Jr., Mary Angela, Marisa (Scott), Tiana, Gasparo, Tom, Jr. (Jessica), Steven, Joseph and great-granddaughter Lux. Sister-in-law Carol, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband Gasparo (Spano) Giacalone, son Edward Paul Hill (Little Eddie), parents Angelina and Antonio, brother Carmelo, sister Rosie and brother-in-law Leelon.
Due to pandemic restrictions, private services were held. A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be at a later date.
Mary loved the Blessed Mother and as a devout Catholic believed in the power of prayer. Please say a prayer to assist in her journey to heaven.
