Elizabeth “Libby” Manian dedicated her life to empowering women and all workers through union negotiations and feminist activism. Libby died suddenly on December 26, 2020 at the age of 69, her voice and life’s work, are now her legacy.
Libby was born Elizabeth Ann Czulinski on February 19, 1951 in Hamtramck, Michigan to Bernard and Patronella (Nobar). She graduated class of 1969 from Center Line High School in Warren and attended school at the Detroit College of Business where she earned her Associate’s Degree. Libby married Steven Manian in 1972. Together, they bought a house in Roseville where they lived for 36 years and raised a son.
She worked as an accountant, and as a secretary for the labor unions and strongly believed that unions were an effective way to uplift women in the workplace. Libby passionately negotiated with employers on behalf of workers to improve the quality of life on the job for everyone. When she entered a room, she held court. Libby was strong, but positive; she was a loving and generous woman with lots of friends. Her absence will be great because of the impression she made.
In her personal life, Libby was a wife, a mother and a grandmother. Good with her hands, she was willing to try any new hobby such as quilting, knitting and creating stained glass; however, none of those outweighed her love of gardening.
Those left in shock over the sudden loss of such a dynamic person are Libby’s husband of 49 years, Steven, son, Lucas and his spouse, Jenni, grandson, Ali Manian, siblings, Robert and Mary Ellen. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial contributions may be made in Libby’s memory to Heifer International, an organization she admired for their commitment to end poverty and hunger and uplift people around the world. Please learn more and donate at heifer.org.
Arrangements are entrusted to Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City.
