Shirley Young Adwers left her life on earth for a better place in heaven on Tuesday, December 29th, 2020. Shirley led an amazingly diverse life in her 87 years. She was born in Houston on September 6, 1933, and grew up in the Heights neighborhood, the youngest of 6 children. She labored with her father in his cabinet shop, learning to be a perfectionist and hard worker. These skills acquired at an early age made her very successful in whatever endeavor she pursued. She lived with her father-in-law on his ranch, learning about horses and cattle, while her first husband served his country during the Korean War. Shirley had 6 children, but still managed to pursue a career as a real estate broker, provide bookkeeping and income tax return preparation services, raise and show horses, and accomplish hobbies such as photography, gardening, making ceramics, sewing, reading books, traveling and cooking. She made the best apricot strudel in the world!
Shirley married Ron Adwers in 1974, and they moved from Houston to Tulsa, Okla. Shirley continued to work as a real estate broker in Tulsa, and also started investing in real estate. She provided bookkeeping and income tax services until she retired . Ron and Shirley raised Appaloosa horses in Tulsa, and, in her 50s, she went to college and earned a degree in horse and ranch management. In 2001, Ron and Shirley retired and moved to Burnet County to be closer to family. They purchased and later sold the Pecanderosa, a pecan farm in Fairland. Shirley loved to hunt, and was a sharpshooter. She even went deer hunting in her wheel chair last deer season. She enjoyed antique cars and car shows, and was particularly proud of her 1968 mercury cougar XR7.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 46 years, Ronald Adwers, sister Laura Young Jageman, daughter Melanie Rutledge (spouse Floyd), son David Griffith (spouse Penny), son John Michael Griffith (spouse Susan), son Robert Griffith (spouse Kathy) and son James Griffith, stepdaughter Lou Ann Adwers, stepson Douglas Adwers and stepdaughter Amy Baird (spouse Brady), and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. Her son Paul Griffith preceded her in death.
