It saddens us to announce the peaceful passing of Nellie at 103 years. She was born in Jedburgh, Saskatchewan. She was the 7th of 14 children of Joseph and Pearl Oscienny and the last survivor. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas, and her daughter-in-law, Annie.
Nellie is survived and remembered by: her children, Larry, Linda (Terry), Dennis, and Judy; her grandchildren, Cody (Vanessa), Tim (Erin), Casey (Kim), Davis (Lisa), Brianna (Ola), and Shelby; her great grandchildren, Ashley, Aaliyah, Aurora, Aiden, Mackenzie, Jackson, Carter, Hudson, Evangeline, and Lulamae; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Nellie will always be remembered for her kind, gentle, and generous soul. She was a proud Ukrainian and happy to welcome you into her home. She would not let you leave unfed and generously shared her perogies and cabbage rolls. She enjoyed a good chat over a social drink. Some of her best times were spent with relatives where they would talk until the wee hours only to rise early to get the coffee and bacon started.
She was a dedicated and supportive fan to the Canucks and Blue Jays. She was rewarded by winning an all expense paid vacation to the Caribbean in a Vancouver Sun contest to “Spot the Puck” in a photo.
She loved the thrill of winning a bingo game and often shared her winnings. Her 40 years of bowling earned her many trophies, awards, and life long friends.
She always had a knitting or crochet project on the go creating beautiful blankets and warm sweaters.
She loved her home and took pride in looking after it and happily tended her vegetable and flower gardens. She made her way to Vancouver from Saskatchewan as a single independent woman where she opened her own hair salon. Attending Saturday night dances with her girlfriends is where she met the love of her life, Thomas.
She lived a good long life and we will miss her everyday with our cherished memories. Mom was a devout catholic and attended her church regularly. She will be laid to rest at a private graveside ceremony in January. God bless you mom.
Thank You to the caregivers and staff at Royal Arch Masonic Lodge who cared deeply for her and treated her with dignity and respect.
