A.L. Slaughter, Jr., beloved father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle, passed away on January 3, 2021. A.L. was born on a ranch in Paint Rock, Texas on September 1, 1934 to Alvin and Eunice Slaughter. He moved to San Antonio, Texas at a young age and graduated from Luther Burbank Vocational High School in 1952. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army where he was ultimately assigned to the 82nd Airborne at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. He then transferred to the United States Army Reserves where he served the remainder of his 41-year military career, retiring as a Sergeant Major. In 1956, he returned to San Antonio and married his high school sweetheart, Jane Elizabeth Sparks. They had 2 children and were married until her death in 1996. He worked in the telephone industry as a communication technician, retiring after 37 years in 1997.
A.L. is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Jane Forsyth and husband Mark of Fort Worth, TX; daughter-in-law Shantel Brietzke Slaughter of New Braunfels, TX, brother, Norman Slaughter of Somerset, TX; sister-in-law, Joan Sparks Wilson and husband Ron of San Antonio; brother-in-law Jerry Sparks and Daniella of Corpus Christi; uncle Frank Stewart of Coleman, TX; grandchildren, Lauren Slaughter and Adam Hite, Jeffrey Scott Slaughter, Jr. and wife Starla; Todd Slaughter; Dusty Slaughter, Rayland Slaughter, and Gunnar Slaughter, as well as five great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. He is preceded in death by his father, Al, mother Eunice Spiers, wife of 39 years Jane Elizabeth Sparks Slaughter, and son Jeffrey Scott Slaughter.
A.L. was a stock car racing fan, enjoyed woodworking, leatherworking, hunting, and family. He served his community as a volunteer fireman with the Windcrest Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He was involved in his children’s lives acting as a Webelos and Cub Scout leader, coaching baseball and softball, and serving as driver extraordinaire for various Scouting campouts for both Scott and Stephanie, baseball and softball games, and wrestling matches. He was the best at baking biscuits, pancakes, German Chocolate cake, anything on the grill, potato salad, the Thanksgiving and Christmas turkey and dressing, and was the family’s very own “Turkey Hotline” when preparing a holiday meal. In his retirement, he enjoyed meeting fellow retirees for breakfast and fellowship, and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
