A Funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock in the morning on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at Elliot-Hamil Funeral Home with the Rev. Marty CashBurless presiding. A graveside service will follow at Snyder Cemetery in Snyder, Texas under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home with Father Brett Banks presiding.
Born January 25th, 1933 in Gainesville, Texas, the only child of John and Vera Stone (Huey). He attended Gainesville High School, and later graduated from Western Texas College in Snyder, Texas.
On July 3, 1953, while stationed at Fort Hood, he married the love of his life Eula Mae Stailey at First Methodist Church in Ft. Worth, Texas. They went on to have two children. In 1958, he moved his family to Abilene and began what would be a long and successful career in law enforcement.
Mr. Stone worked at the Abilene Police Department Criminal Investigative Division (CID), eventually becoming Sergeant. In 1973, at the recommendation of his Chief, he applied and was hired to be the Chief of Police in Snyder, Texas. He would go on to serve a record 18 years as the Chief of Police for Snyder. A Mason and Lion's Club member, Bill was regularly active within his community. In 1991, after 33 years in law enforcement he retired. He was fondly known for his Winnebago, which he frequently used to travel with his wife and grandchildren. He enjoyed visiting the casino with his beloved Son and Daughter. He remained the "chief" enforcement officer of his family, with his grandchildren lovingly remembering his many interrogation sessions, all meant to help them succeed in the world. His lovingly blunt advice will be missed.
He leaves his beloved wife Eula Mae; his son Gary and wife Dewanna of Abilene; and a daughter Debra Banks of Abilene; his grandchildren: Leah, Paul, Travis and Lindsay Stone, William and Trevor Banks, and Brett Banks; and great-grandchildren: Emma, Haylee, Corra, Brayden, Hayden, Lily and Jordyn. He also leaves many cousins and extended family members. He was predeceased in death by his father John Stone, mother Vera Stone, and son-in-law Walter Banks.
The family would like to thank the entire team at Hendrick Hospice Care, especially Becky, Robert, and Courtney. The family asks that donations be made to Hendrick Hospice Care in memory of Mr. Stone.
