Russell Leroy Gloege, 83, passed away peacefully on Thursday January 7, 2021. Russ was born October 12, 1937 in Odessa, Minnesota. He joined the United States Navy on his 17th birthday. After finishing high school in Fargo, North Dakota he moved to San Diego for basic training. Russ remained in the San Diego area until he passed. In the Navy he was trained as a radio man and he remembered Morse code his entire life. He later trained as a welder, using his G.I. bill, and he worked for many years at National Steel and Shipbuilding in National City. He was also in the U.S. Naval Reserves, Sea Bees, as an Iron Worker. In his later life he worked as a para legal. Russ enjoyed camping and creating tile mosaics.
He met his wife, Josephine “Susan” (Estrada) in San Diego and they married in 1958. Susan preceded him in death in 2002.The couple had four sons. Russell will be missed by many.
Surviving Russ are his sons, David Michael Gloege and his wife Margaret, Donald James Gloege and his wife Mary, Daniel Mark Gloege and Douglas John Gloege. Russ leaves behind four grandchildren, Jon Davis, Andrea Wheeler, Kenny Gloege and Elizabeth (Gloege) Robinson.
A private service, with United States Navy Honors, is scheduled for a later date. Russ will be inurned at Miramar National Cemetery.
