Virginia Cooper Herron, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2021. Virginia was born on Oct. 12, 1930 in New Orleans, LA to Blanche and Vivian Filson Cooper. She moved with her family to Atlanta in 1937, attending R.L. Hope Elementary School and North Fulton High School. She graduated from the University of Georgia in 1952 with a BS degree in Education and Business, where she was a UGA Cheerleader, and a member Pi Beta Phi sorority. Virginia was also a member of UGA’s Varsity Swimming and Tennis Teams, and was one of only two women to letter in UGA varsity sports her senior year.
As a young woman, Virginia worked for five years for Trust Company Bank. She married W. Clyde Herron, Jr. in 1956, and in 1962, they moved to Sandy Springs with their three children, Julie, Clay and Patty. Virginia and Clyde loved to entertain and had a large group of friends, many of whom dated back to Virginia’s high school days. She was active in PEO, Rabun Gap-Nacoochee Junior Guild, served as president of her church circle at the Cathedral of St. Philip and was involved in other charitable organizations. She was a Girl Scout leader for seven years, PTA volunteer and neighborhood swimming and diving teacher, whom the neighborhood kids called “Tadpole”. Several times during the 1980’s, her USTA Tennis Team won the State Senior Championship. When her children were older, Virginia returned to banking, working for what was then First Atlanta Bank (later Wachovia). Her friendly demeanor and competence at the teller window earned her many accolades and faithful customers until she retired 20 years later.
In her retirement years, she and Clyde “completed the circle” by moving to Canterbury Court on Peachtree Road, which is located on the site of her childhood home. Here, she and Clyde greatly enjoyed making new friends, traveling, attending the community’s many social activities and taking advantage of the daily exercise classes. Virginia was predeceased by her parents and brother, Fil Cooper. She is survived by her husband of nearly 65 years, Clyde Herron, daughters Julie Carson (Neville) and Patty Hunter (Bruce), and son Clay (Marcy). She is also survived by grandchildren Dailey Dewling (Robby), Patrick Hunter, Eva Herron and Nicholas Carson, as well as two great-grandsons, Jack and Rory Dewling. The family would like to thank the healthcare staff of Canterbury Court who gave Virginia such excellent care over the past few years. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association and/or the Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta.
