Barkev Edward Harpootian (Ed Harver) was born in Philadelphia, PA to parents Harry and Elizabeth Harpootian. His brother, Harold, was born in 1924. Elizabeth’s mother, Mary Eskijian (affectionately called Medzy), lived with them. On Ed’s fifth birthday, the family moved to Pasadena, CA. In 1932, Ed’s sister, Rosemary, was born. During his school years in Pasadena, Ed and his family attended the Armenian Brethren Church. The Halajian family also attended that church. He eventually met Ruth Halajian and they were married on November 7, 1947. Ed served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 – 1946. On October 29, 1948, older son, Ed was born.
Ed received a Bachelor of Arts from USC in 1951, then in 1952 he received a Master of Science in Education, also from USC. Also, in 1952 Ed was recalled into the Navy during the Korean War and was stationed as a corpsman in San Diego. Ed and his family lived in San Diego from 1952 – 1953, then moved back to Pasadena. Ed requested a name change at that time to B. Edward Harver. On April 27, 1954, younger son, Harold was born. In 1957 Ed received a Master of Science in Guidance and Counseling, also from USC. The family moved to Arcadia where Ed first taught and later became a guidance counselor at the high school. He also was an assistant principal at one of the junior high schools. He then became principal of First Avenue Junior High School where he retired in 1982. Ed and Ruth joined the Church of the Good Shepherd in Arcadia where they became part of the Coweds group. They enjoyed many activities with this group of friends including playing bridge and going on golf outings.
After Ed and Harold had graduated from high school, college and professional school, Ed and Ruth moved first to Carlsbad then to San Clemente. Their house had an ocean view and they spent 20 wonderful years there. Ed and Ruth often hosted family and friends in their home, something they enjoyed doing together.
Due to declining health, Ed and Ruth sold the San Clemente house in December 2005 and moved to Mount Miguel Covenant Village, a retirement community in Spring Valley, CA. Again, Ed and Ruth met many wonderful new friends at the Village. In March 2013 Ruth died. By 2018 Ed could no longer live independently, so he was moved to the Assisted Living building at Mt. Miguel. Having had a full life as a devoted husband, father and friend he passed away on January 7, 2021.
