Josephine M. Alerio Benson, 95, of Lexington, SC passed away on Sunday, January 10, 2021 at home surrounded by family. She was born in Susquehanna, PA on August 23, 1925 to the late Matteo Alerio and Marie Guiseppa DeRosa Alerio.
Ms. Benson was an Army Nurse Cadet during World War II. Originally from Sidney, NY, she worked at The Hospital until relocating to SC in 1968. Retiring from Lexington Medical Center in 2000, she enjoyed giving back by volunteering at LMC Lexington until last year. She was also involved with Oliver Gospel Mission knitting hats and scarves for the homeless.
She was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Clarence Benson; son, Edward Benson and brothers, Mathew and Michael Alerio.
Ms. Benson is survived by her children, Celia Gumaer of Lexington, Frederick Benson (Linda) of Charlotte, Mary Jane Murphy (Harold) of Gilbert and Joanne Roland (Randy) of Leesville; grandchildren, Michael Hightower, Stephanie Olmstead, Will Gumaer, Colleen Cortright, Jeremy Murphy; three great grandchildren and sister, Celia Hawely.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 15, 2021 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 2350 Augusta Hwy., Lexington, SC 29072. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, 503 North Lake Drive, Lexington, SC 29072.
