Bernard Z. Schantzer, 93, passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2021 in Glen Cove, New York. Known by most as “Bernie,” he was born on July 6, 1927 in Coatesville, PA to Max and Margaret Schantzer. Bernie graduated from Coatesville’s S. Horace Scott High School, class of 1945 and was an army veteran. He met the love of his life, Claire Frank Schantzer, at a dance in Lancaster, PA and embarked upon a beautiful love story that lasted for almost 70 years, until Claire passed away in 2015. Bernie and Claire lived in Coatesville and raised three children there; Wendy Schantzer, Maxine Schantzer Wolf and Mark Schantzer. He is survived by his children; his daughter-in-law Debbie Schantzer, two grandchildren, Danielle Schantzer Mertz and Maylee Wolf; and three great-grandchildren; Degan, Hayden and Madden Mertz. He is predeceased by his wife Claire Schantzer, sister Shirley Schantzer Prince, and his grandson Desmond Schantzer.
Bernie was a kind and gentle man, well loved by all who knew him. He started his career building, with his father, the Silver Theater in Coatesville, PA, moved on to running the Fulton Theater in Lancaster, PA and then to his personnel, office and accounting services business, CPS Inc, in Philadelphia, PA. A hard worker who always enjoyed his job, Bernie retired at the age of 80. Bernie loved music and was an avid concert goer. One of his favorite stories was when he was leaving his office to rush to see Earth, Wind and Fire perform in Philadelphia, the lead singer of the group walked into his office to get something notarized. Bernie, in shock said, “I have to hurry, I’m closing up early today to go see you in concert!” Needless to say, he got an autograph and a great memory. Bernie loved football, the Eagles, the 76ers and the Temple Owls. But most of all he loved his wife and his children. And they loved him, and still do. He is cherished by his family and will be greatly missed.
Private funeral services are being held at the New Montefiore Cemetery in West Babylon, New York on Thursday, January 14, 2021. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association, alz.org.
