

On July 8, 1930, Sylvia Newhook was born in Norman’s Cove, Newfoundland, Canada. Sylvia came to Jacksonville, NC in the early 1950's where she met a young man and member of the United States Marine Corps, Maurice Ray. The couple married on October 27, 1957 and Sylvia thereafter became a United States citizen in 1960.
The couple moved to Orlando, FL in 1970. They bought a home in Wekiva, Longwood, Florida in 1975 and the couple lived there for the rest of their active lives, about 40 years. In all, the couple was married for nearly 60 years until Sylvia's husband passed away in 2017, just 3 months shy of their 60th wedding anniversary.
Sylvia was living in Cape Coral, Florida at the time of her passing and is survived by 3 daughters, Nancy, Susan and Teresa. She is also leaved behind 11 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and many extended family members. Sadly, Sylvia was predeceased by one son, Robert.
A Memorial to Celebrate Sylvia's life will be held on Sunday, April 26, 2026 at Coral Ridge Funeral Home, 950 Chiquita Blvd. S., Cape Coral, FL 33991, (239) 283-0540. Guests are welcome to gather beginning at 11:00 AM with a Remembrance Ceremony being Officiated by Pastor Graham Stein beginning at 12:00 Noon.
The family is planning a time of fellowship after these ceremonies to celebrate Sylvia's well-lived life. This reception will be conducted only a short distance away from the funeral home and directions will be provided on the day of services for those in attendance. All who knew and loved Sylvia and her family are encouraged to attend both at the funeral home and the reception following.
