After a period of illness, Jeanne passed away in Markham-Stouffville Hospital. During her stay, she was surrounded by her loving family. Beloved wife to Dusan (d. 1994), and devoted mother to sons Peter (Susan), Nicholas (Carol) and David (Cinda), Jeanne was the dear grandmother of Nikki, Steven, Alicia, Heather and Andrew, and great-grandmother to Dominick.
Jeanne had a long and distinguished career in education in roles ranging from classroom teacher to Superintendent for the Scarborough Board of Education. She was the President of the Federation of Women Teachers of Ontario and the first President of the Canadian Institute for Reading Recovery - an initiative she helped to bring to Canada.
Jeanne is remembered fondly by friends and colleagues around the world for her gregarious and outgoing personality, as well as for her extraordinary contributions to the advancement of children’s early literacy and of women’s rights. She remained dedicated to helping others through charitable causes until her last days, and her absence will be felt by many.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in her name - either to the Canadian Institute of Reading Recovery or to the Markham-Stouffville Hospital Foundation.
Visitation for Jeanne will be held Tuesday, August 27, 2019 from 2 to 4 PM and from 7 to 9 PM and also Wednesday, August 28th at 10 AM at Giffen-Mack Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 4115 Lawrence Ave East, West Hill, ON.
