Betty was born on February 23, 1933, in Tacoma Park, Maryland to OJ and Catherine (Smith) Mayfield. The family later moved to Charles City, Iowa and she graduated from Charles City High School. She graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor’s degree and went on to teach one year at North Polk Jr and Sr High School in Physical Education. Betty was united in marriage to Dean E. Sogard on August 21, 1955. They lived in a couple towns including Charles City before moving to Ames in 1963. They welcomed four children, and Betty stayed at home to raise her family full time.
Betty had many interests, from crafts, to swimming, to Iowa State sports. Betty was an avid crafter, starting with sewing and knitting then added needlework, machine embroidery, and eventually a knitting machine (also known as her fifth child).
Betty didn’t meet an outside pool she didn’t like. She was a regular lap swimmer for over 40 years. Swimming laps at Ames High School in the “off season” and at Carr pool in the summer months, and then moving to the Fuhrman Aquatic Center after Carr pool closed. In addition to being a swimmer, Betty also was involved in synchronized swimming while in college at Iowa and also had the opportunity to assist with teaching in her early years in Ames. Always a physical education teacher at heart, Betty became involved in Ames parks and recreation and was a chairperson on the city of Ames Park and Recreation Committee for two years, she also was a member of the Friends of Ames Swimming.
Although a University of Iowa graduate, Betty was an Iowa State sports fan too. Feeling conflicted when it came to the annual Iowa vs Iowa State football and basketball games. She and Dean had football season tickets for many years and enjoyed the regular tailgating before the games. She also accepted endless ribbing from her husband for being a graduate of the University of Iowa.
She is survived by her four children: Mark Sogard of San Antonio, TX, David (Kolleen) Sogard of Edina, MN, Philip (Paula) Sogard of Hugo, MN, and Stefani (Kevin) Kloiber of Blaine, MN and; one sister, Marilyn DeMars of Marble Falls, TX; grandchildren: Jonathan (Mariana) Sogard, Anna (Nick) Miller, Kyle (Mimi Danicic) Sogard, Joseph Sogard, Patrick and Paige Sogard, and great grandchildren: Liv Miller and Peter Sogard.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dean Sogard (2011), and a brother, John Mayfield and sister Kathleen Beninga.
Betty’s family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Green Hills for the loving care they provided.
