Terry Bard Moore, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, died unexpectedly at his home in Ames, Iowa on March 31, 2023, of natural causes. Terry passed away peacefully in his sleep late that evening after dozing off watching basketball, a favorite activity for most of his life.
Terry was born July 22, 1940, in Louisville, Kentucky to Ralph and Winifred Moore. After his father died suddenly in 1948, Terry moved with his mother and sister to Lineville, Iowa. Terry resided in Iowa for over 70 years, graduating from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines in 1958 and later from Drake University with a B.A., before going into business. He pursued a number of different careers over his life, including as a sales representative, insurance agent, and innkeeper, excelling at all of them.
He is survived by his loving wife of more than 46 years, Margie Viola Moore (Uggerby), and numerous children and grandchildren: Barton Evan Schaefer (Maija Kuhlman), Kevin Moore, Todd Michael Schaefer (Kathy Allen), Matthew Peter Schaefer (Sarah Compton), Erin Elizabeth Moore, Benjamin Schaefer (Karah Kemmerly), Justin Schaefer (Sean Salley), Liam Connor-Schaefer, Declan Connor-Schaefer, Charlie Compton, Oliver Compton, Zachary Stein, Miles Stein, and Emerson Cox. He was blessed with many cousins, as well as a niece and nephew, who also survive him. He was predeceased by his parents, Ralph Bard Moore and Winifred Easter Moore (Laughlin), his sister, Carla Jane Eshelman (Moore), and his brother-in-law, Earl Eshelman.
Terry will be remembered most by all who knew him for his wonderful sense of humor and zest for life. His talents and interests were many and varied – storytelling, home projects, politics, travel, opera, reading, gardening, cooking, sports, and generally being as entertaining, engaging, and kind a fellow as one could ever hope to meet. He was devoted to Margie and happiest spending time with family and friends. Terry enjoyed coaching athletics, including youth soccer and basketball. He loved animals and cared for numerous cats and dogs. He became a non-denominational minister in his early 50s and had the honor to preside as officiant at more than 300 marriages of couples from across the rainbow of life. He touched countless lives and is fondly remembered by those fortunate to have known or encountered him.
Planning a memorial for Terry is not yet complete. Friends and family are invited in the meantime to celebrate him in their own way – perhaps as he would have liked, with a toast, a joyful story, and a hearty laugh.
