George Boyle

George is survived by his wife of 57 years, Virginia and their children, Virginia and her husband Glenn Morris of Lansdale, PA, Patricia of Raleigh, NC, George and his wife Elizabeth of Irvington, NY, Christopher and his wife Carol of Garden City, NY and James and his wife Maureen of Garner NC. In the circle and closest to his heart were his five grandchildren, Jack, Sarah, Christopher, Matthew and Caitlin Boyle.

George was a longtime resident of Garden City, NY and Caroga Lake, NY before moving to Cary, NC in 1988 then to Pittsboro, NC in 2005.

George was a worker, leader and mentor. He received academic scholarships to both Bishop Loughlin High School and Manhattan College in NY. At Manhattan, he was Student Council President, Managing Editor of the school’s newspaper and President of the Debate Society. In the May, 1952 issue of the Manhattan College Newspaper, The Quadrangle, an article stated, “There is no doubt that Mr. Boyle achieved the extra-curricular acme here at Manhattan, but it’s likewise true that not a man on campus worked as diligently and conscientiously to earn these accolades. He is living testimony of the axiom that success comes to those who work hardest for it.”

In 1954, he graduated from Columbia Law School. His law career started in NYC with the firm Mitchell, Petty followed by Brown and Wood, where he was a senior partner. In 1988, he joined Poyner and Spruill, LLC, in Raleigh, NC. Throughout his career, he specialized in Public Finance. He was an invaluable legal advisor to the former State Treasurer, Harlan Boyles and local municipalities.

George will be remembered for his deep faith, love of his wife and family, willingness to debate all, and passing quiet time with a newspaper, hot tea and a roll of his favorite candy, Necco wafers.

There will be a visitation on Friday, August 19, 2011 from 6pm-8pm at Apex Funeral Home, 550 Williams Street, Apex, NC 27502. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at 10am at St. Andrew The Apostle Catholic Church, 3008 Old Raleigh Rd. Apex, NC.
