Born on December 17, 1944, Hugh proudly served his country as a U.S. Army veteran with the Corps of Engineers. Following his military service, he built a long and dedicated career with Central Hudson Gas and Electric before retiring.
Hugh was a man of many passions and lived life with enthusiasm and heart. An avid sportsman, he found great joy in hunting and fishing—especially when sharing those moments with his sons. He had a deep appreciation for music and expressed his creativity through drawing and carving. His love for Harley Davidsons reflected his adventurous spirit, while his enjoyment of YouTube and Amazon showed his curiosity and embrace of modern life.
He cherished simple pleasures: shooting his gun at the range, savoring a good cheeseburger, and never missing the chance to enjoy a lively party. These joys were made even more meaningful when shared with family and friends.
Hugh was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Emily Mary Perrotta Smith, and his brother Mike Smith.
He is survived by his sons: Scott Randy Smith and wife Nikki; James Michael Smith and wife Allison. He also leaves behind grandchildren Brendan Smith and wife Angel; Bryanna Smith and fiancée Foster Williamson; Brandi Paxton; Brooke Paxton; Mikayla Smith; and Kai Smith. He is also remembered by his sister-in-law Judy Smith.
May Hugh’s memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire stories of laughter, love, and adventure for years to come.
