OBITUARY

Janet Linker Mitchell

22 August, 1930 – 1 March, 2024
IN THE CARE OF

Apex Funeral Home

Janet Linker Mitchell, 93, of Apex, NC (formally of Southern Pines, NC) passed away peacefully on Friday, March 1, 2024.

Janet was born on August 22, 1930, in Charlotte, NC. She attended Central High School there but moved to Raleigh, NC and completed high school at Needham Broughton High. Introduced by mutual friends that all attended Broughton she met her future husband, Richard T. Mitchell (Dick). She would go on to attend Women’s College, which is now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She would excel there not only in academics but also on the Field Hockey Team.

After their marriage in 1953, Dick and Janet lived in Wrightsville Beach and Wilmington, NC for a time with their beloved dachshund, Liese, surviving Hurricane Hazel in 1954. After that, they moved to New York, where their oldest daughter was born. In 1961, they moved to Southern Pines where their other two daughters were born. Dick was a partner at Hayes Howell and Associates Architects and after he passed in 2000, Janet stayed in their home another 22 years, before moving to Apex, NC in 2022, to live with their middle daughter.

While living in Southern Pines, Janet worked as a Third-Grade teacher at Episcopal Day School for many years. She was loved by all of her students as well as the faculty and staff. One of the students’ favorite things about “Mrs. Mitchell” was her annual Halloween Haunted Room. Her students would help plan the all-day event and played a part in pulling it off. Her husband and youngest daughter helped out as well.

The Mitchell family were active members of Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church. Dick and Janet were members of the Chancel Choir and the Handbell Choir for many years. Janet was also part of the Manna group that served at different events at the church. She loved being a part of the church and her community. Janet was also known there for creating wonderful bulletin boards for the choir practice area.

Janet was preceded in passing by her parents, Charles E. and Bertha A. Linker (nee Ebner), as well as her brother, Louis E. Linker. She was also preceded by her husband, Richard T. Mitchell. She is survived by their 3 daughters and 5 grandchildren: Nancy Mitchell Pergerson (and child, Erik) of Charlotte, NC; Susan Mitchell Copeland (husband, Doug and children, Samantha and Joey) of Apex, NC; and Linda Mitchell Comstock (husband, Bill and children Mitch and LeighAnne) of Greensboro, NC.

Arrangements are in the process of being made and a service will be held later at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church. Janet will be laid to rest at Raleigh Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make donations to the SECU Hospice House of Pittsboro, NC and/or Smithfield, NC (monetary, baked goods, bag lunches for visitors or blankets) or to a Breast Cancer Foundation of your choosing, in her name. Donations could also be made to the Episcopal Day School (monetary or supplies) or to Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church in her name.
