John was born June 6, 1938 in Salem, MA to the late John Lawrence Hubisz, Sr, and Mary Agnes Fleming Hubisz. He joined the NC State Department of Physics in 1993 as a visiting physics professor, recently retired.
Professor Hubisz received his PhD in 1968 from York University and the Centre for Research in Experimental Space Science, Toronto, Ontario.
At NCSU, his research centered on physics education. Along with Professor Gould, he carried out a study of errors in middle school science texts, which was covered by the NY Times, USA Today, and Reader's Digest, in addition to other news media in the U.S. and abroad. In connection with this work, he was interviewed by ABC, CBS, NBC, and the Fox network.
He was president of the American Association of Physics Teachers in 2001; was named Hewlett Fellow, 1997-1999; and received the NC State Alumni Outstanding Extension and Outreach Award in 2004. He was professor emeritus from College of the Mainland, Texas City, Texas after teaching physics there from 1970-1992.
John was ordained as a deacon on June 14, 1975, and was the longest serving deacon in the Raleigh Diocese. His most recent service was at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Apex.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Marilyn MacCaffrey; brother, James Hubisz; and daughter-in-law, Kathy Campbell.
John is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jola Griffith Hubisz; daughters: Shelly Hubisz and Francie Seymour (Mike); sons: Myke Hubisz and Billy Hubisz (Donzetta); sisters: Martie Verlander, Mary Fraser; brothers: Joseph, Jan Peter, Jeremy and Jeoff Hubisz; grandchildren: Cory, Joshua, Darian, Sebastian, Nicole and Tisha; and great grandchildren, Ember and Josh.
The family will have a viewing for friends and family from 1-2:15pm Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, 625 Magdala Place, Apex, NC 27502. A Funeral Mass will follow immediately at 2:30pm. Inurnment in the church columbarium will follow at a later date.
