

Pearl Gray Mitchell Sikes, 77, of New Hill passed away peacefully with her family beside her on Friday, May 24, 2013 in UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. She was born June 29, 1935 at home near Bonsal in Chatham County, the daughter of Henry Alvin Mitchell and Martha Annie Jones. She married her husband of 60 years, Robert Wesley Sikes on December 6, 1952 in Chesterfield, SC. Mrs. Sikes was a homemaker, a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, member of the Brown Baldwin Circle and president of the 4H Club for a few years. She attended Moncure High School and hosted the Mitchell Family Reunion for 20 years.
Mrs. Sikes is survived by her husband, Robert Wesley Sikes, sons: Wallace Craig Sikes and wife Debbie Green of Garner, and Wayne Barry Sikes of New Hill; grandchildren: Jessica Carmen Sikes and husband, Allen Williford of Willow Springs, Melanie Dawn Sikes of Garner; great grandchildren: Benny Lofton Williford, Lexus Jade Cook and Abigail Brooklyn Cook; sister: Ila Mae Mitchell and husband, Stanley Wittenberg of Cary; brothers-in-law, Walter Lee Sikes of New Hill, and Curtis Garlin Sikes and wife Rose Mary Oakley Sikes of Durham.
She is preceded in death by her brothers and sisters: Mary Bell Mitchell McCann, Katy Lee Mitchell Donaldson, Dartha Cornelius Mitchell Howard, Henry Otis Mitchell, Charlie Benton Mitchell, Ray Rufus Mitchell and Clarie Mitchell; and half brother, Clyde Dixon Mitchell.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. Apex.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 724 Beaver Creek Rd, Apex. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
