

Rev. Robert Lee Weatherspoon, Jr., 76, of Hillsborough passed away Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at Duke University Medical Center. Reverend Weatherspoon was born August 26, 1934 in Durham, NC, the son of the late Robert Lee Weatherspoon, Sr. and Elma Douglas Weatherspoon. He attended Durham City Schools, graduating from Durham High School in 1952. He received his B.A. Degree in Sociology from Wake Forest College in 1956 (the last graduating class on the old campus in Wake Forest, NC.) He remained on the campus in Wake Forest after it became Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, earning a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1960. He earned his Master of Divinity degree from Southeastern Seminary in 1971. Bob always had a passion for sports, playing football, baseball, and basketball in his high school years and was on the basketball team at Wake Forest College under Coach Bones McKinney.
In his senior year of college, he was called to serve as minister of Good Hope Baptist Church in Cary, NC and served there while finishing graduate school. During his first year at Good Hope, he married his high school sweetheart, Jacqueline Richards. He went on to serve as pastor of Samaria Baptist Church in Samaria, NC, Four Oaks Baptist Church in Four Oaks, NC, Longview Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC, and again at Good Hope Baptist Church in Cary where he retired from the ministry in 1996 after 40 years of service.
In addition to his wife, Jackie, he is survived by daughter, Jennifer Weatherspoon Creech and husband Ryan; son, Robert Lee Weatherspoon III (Bob)and wife, Amy; daughter, Amanda Weatherspoon Mizelle and husband, Randy; son, William Franklin Weatherspoon (Bill) and wife Lee Anne; nine grandchildren: granddaughter, Ashley Deal and husband, Scot; granddaughter Courtney Creech, grandson Alexander Creech, granddaughter Kelsea Creech, granddaughters Nicole Weatherspoon and Brooke Weatherspoon, grandson Tanner Mizelle, granddaughter Kylie Mizelle, grandson Andrew Fulk and two great-grandchildren, Melanie Weatherspoon and Lucas Deal. He is also survived by his brother, William Douglas Weatherspoon (Bill) and wife Mary of Durham, NC and their children, Doug Weatherspoon and family and Susan Weatherspoon Bolton and family.
Services will be held on Saturday, July 2, at Good Hope Baptist Church in Cary, N.C. Viewing will begin at 11:30am in the church sanctuary, memorial service at 1:00pm with burial following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Good Hope Baptist Church Family Life Center following the burial.
