A life-long Tar Heel, Ruth was a graduate of UNCG and married Woodrow Wilson Maynard in July of 1942. The happy couple cheered their beloved UNC Tar Heels to many victories during their 59 years of marriage, even traveling the road (and the airways) to the Final Four. She had a strong sense of family and community, and she gave generously of herself, her time, and her resources to those organizations she respected. She loved music, theater, and dance, and she would speak fondly of her days when she could really “cut a rug.” She was proud to have started the “Apex Teenage Club” – a place where teenagers could meet, dance, and practice social graces. Ruth was a retired Harnett County social worker, a member of Apex Baptist Church and Methodist Women’s Circle. Her social views of the world were far ahead of her time; she engendered in her family from the beginning a love for people of all colors, races, creeds, and orientation. In recent years, she and dear friends visited together at Dallas every Wednesday to catch up on all the important Apex happenings.
Survivors include her daughters, Marcia M. Lund and husband Adrian of McLean, VA, and Gray M. Roth and husband Tom of Apex; grandchildren, Christopher Lund and wife Kelley of Ashburn, VA, Seth Hardison and wife Robin of Buies Creek, NC, Alison Bowman and husband Justin of Apex and Allison Roth of Dahlonega, GA; beautiful great-grandchildren, Summer Hardison, Angelica Hardison, Chadisey Hardison, Winter Hardison, Autumn Hardison, Eliana Lund, and Kaylie Bowman; and brother Fred Gray Cash, Jr. and wife Alice of Apex.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, March 28, 2011 at 3 PM at Apex City Cemetery in Apex. Family will receive friends following the service at Ruth’s home at 610 Hunter Street, Apex, until 7 PM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ruth’s memory can be made to Hospice of Wake County, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.
