

Sidney Graydon Armsworthy, age 83, of Raleigh, North Carolina passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2023. Born to William Graydon and Nevis Armsworthy on October 2, 1939 in Reedville, Virginia. Sidney grew up on the waterfront in Reedville boating, fishing, hunting, and helping his father at the machine shop.
When Sidney was in high school, he played multiple sports including, baseball, track and basketball. He holds the individual record for scoring 55 points in a single basketball game at Northumberland High School. By the age of 18 he built a waterjet boat and would place a $5 bill on the dash and bet friends they could not grab it after he floored it. Sidney graduated from Hampden-Sydney College. He went on to work in insurance, real estate and banking. He married his loving wife, Monnie 48 years ago, and they had a son, Graydon. Sidney was a great father to Graydon, teaching him golf, fishing, boats, navigation, woodworking, and other hobbies.
Sidney even let Graydon captain his 42ft Tiffany yacht to prom dinner with six couples when Graydon was 17 years old. He enjoyed fishing with Graydon throughout his life including a fishing trip to Mexico. Sidney always seemed to have some sort of projects happening, including rebuilding a car for Graydon when he was a teenager. He liked building furniture in his wood shop or restoring a boat.
In later years he and his wife, Monnie, completed multiple cross-country road trips to visit, Graydon, in San Diego, CA. They also enjoyed international cruises to Central America and Europe. His grandkids loved the yearly visits to Reedville to visit "PopPop" and "Nonee". They all looked forward to crabbing on the dock, fishing, and tubing on the boat. The grandkids also loved PopPop's "pound cake" among other desserts in which they shared mutual interests in.
Sidney was involved with Bethany United Methodist Church in Reedville from his childhood years onward. Throughout his life, Sidney deeply admired the beauty of God's creation in nature. In the end, he understood and believed in God's love and forgiveness in Christ. May he rest in peace until our Lord returns to make all things new.
He is survived by his wife, Monnie Armsworthy; son, Frank Graydon Armsworthy (Melody Armsworthy); and three grandchildren, Myra, Lucy, and Taylor Armsworthy.
Along with his parents, Sidney is preceded in death by his sisters, Peggy Straughan and Mary Jane Barr.
Sidney will be buried on the Armsworthy family plot in Reedville, Virginia.
