Aloren Carter Mince, 92, of Arlington, Texas passed away Thursday, May 18, 2023 while surrounded by his wife and three sons. Memorials to Mission Arlington (missionarlington.org).
Al was born in Canton, Texas to Flynn and Pearl Carter Mince on May 22, 1930. Flynn was a farmer, and Al was not a fan of farm life. He especially disliked when his mother would force the family to seek shelter in a spider-filled storm cellar every time there was a cloud in the sky. Al left the farm to attend Crozier Tech High School in Dallas where he graduated in 1947. He then attended Henderson County Junior College, and later North Texas State where he was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity and received a degree in business in 1953. He somehow forgot to mention to his sons that he received three D’s while at North Texas. After college he joined the army to see the world (he got as far as an overnight camping trip in New Mexico). Al enjoyed army-life about as much as farm-life and got out as soon as he could. He went to work for an insurance company in Dallas where a beautiful, young file clerk caught his eye. When Al went to pick Patricia Shaver up for their first date, Patty’s mother informed her that she wasn’t going anywhere with that old man. Despite this initial obstacle, Al and Patty married on June 15, 1957. Patty gave him three sons whom he affectionately characterized as The Yuppie, The Redneck, and The Damned Liberal. Al was an excellent bridge player, an avid golfer, and a member of Rolling Hills Country Club since 1971 where he won countless golf tournaments despite always denying being a sandbagger. He served on the boards of the American Heart Association, American Bank, RHCC, and was an active member of the American Business Clubs (AMBUCS) where he served as chapter president and wore a silly hat. Al enjoyed organizing charity golf tournaments and spending summers in Ruidoso to escape the Texas heat, play golf, and lose his sons’ inheritance at the racetrack. Al will mostly be remembered for his charming personality, his unfailing integrity, and his love of tacos from Taco Bell. Some called him Al, Aloren, Dad, or Poppy, but all will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Clifton and Whetah Mince, and by his sister Gloria Pennington.
Survivors include: his wife of 65 years, Patty; sons Greg, Gary (Julie), and David (Tracey); six grandchildren and one great granddaughter; and numerous other family and friends.
