The world lost a good man this week. Ben passed away on Sunday, June 15, 2014 at Medical Center of Arlington. Ben was born March 26, 1961 in Dallas and graduated in 1979 from Bryan Adams High School. In 1989, Ben married Teresa Saul, the love of his life. They would have celebrated their 25th anniversary in December.
As a boy, Ben played soccer. For most of his life, he was very active in a men’s soccer league, North Texas Premier Soccer Association; first as a player, then a coach, then Division Commissioner and then proudly serving as League Commissioner for the past 15 years. Wherever he went, from the State Fair to Shreveport to the Greek Food Fest, Ben would always meet people he knew from soccer.
Ben was funny, kind, passionate, and a great friend. He could talk about anything to anyone; from computers to movies, music, and history. Ben enjoyed Buddhist meditation, yoga classes and hiking at Cedar Ridge Preserve. He believed in sharing his knowledge with his nieces and nephews. Ben was diagnosed with a high grade sarcoma cancer in May. He prayed to God and was ready to fight. Ben started chemo in June but he lost the battle before it had begun.
Survived by his wife Teresa; his mother Martha Walbert, his father Benjamin Contreras; his brothers and sisters; Lydia Mueller and husband Ed; Fred Urias and wife Sherri; Greg Contreras and wife Debra; Mike Rojo; Cissy Alexander and husband Tony; Patrick Rojo; Ellie Rivera; and Damon Rojo; nieces and nephews; Madison, Kyle, Katlyn, Greg, Daniel, Heather, Christine, Allyson, Mike, Sarah, Samantha, Jessica, Tony, Joseph, Ivan, Jeremiah, Jakob, Adam, Leah and Christian plus numerous relatives. Ben was especially close to his mother-in-law Babs Landon and her sister Diana Brett.
To his team of doctors and nurses at MCA; he called you his angels. The world lost a good man this week, but as a wise man once said, “Sorrows are our best educator. A man can see further through a tear than a telescope.”
