Burt Hyde was born in Grand Island, Nebraska, January 18, 1930, and died March 7, 2016. He was the son of a concert pianist and member of a large family composed of ranchers, doctors, engineers, and teachers. His mother died when he was just a baby, so he was raised by his grandmother and sisters. He grew up poor on a dairy farm in Boelus, Nebraska. He worked hard to get to where he got in life.
He graduated from Boelus High School, then he attended the University of Nebraska; during which time he played baseball for two years. After graduating from medical school in 1956, he was a flight surgeon during the Korean War in the United States Air Force for four years.
In 1961, he moved his family to the HEB area, where he started his medical practice. He provided medical attention to many families and student athletes in the HEB area during his 50 years of practicing medicine. Many of these students, he delivered as babies. He was inducted into the HEB Physicians Hall of Fame at Pennington Field in 1999, where his plaque is one of the many displayed at the Stadium.
He greatly enjoyed all types of nature, especially watching cardinals and blue jays at his bird feeders. He liked gardening, grilling, deer and pheasant hunting, and listening to gospel music. He loved all sports. He always watched the Texas Rangers and the Dallas Cowboys. But he especially loved his Nebraska Cornhuskers. He was an exceptional poker player. But most of all, he loved his family, and gave his whole heart to all of us. Through all the difficulties he endured during his lifetime, he always had unshakable joy!
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Hyde. His surviving children include his only son, John Paul Hyde, who cared for him fulltime during these last 6+ years; and his daughters, Janet Michelle Grentz, Julia Ann Hyde, Joan Marie Vidrine, and husband Ted Vidrine, Jennifer Sue Brown, and Tonya Nichole Hyde. Doc Hyde was a very special man, who impacted many families in the HEB community. He will be greatly missed by so many, and leaves fond memories for all who knew him. He is now home in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ
