Eddie Franklin Mayhugh entered this world on a snowy day, February 9, 1935, in the rural community outside Scott, Arkansas. He grew up in nearby England, Arkansas, where he discovered two lifelong passions—football and farming. As the captain of his high school football team and a proud FFA member, Eddie often boasted that he raised 100 chickens without losing a single one. The money from that endeavor paid his way to junior college and sparked a lifetime of determination.
After junior college, Eddie enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, proudly serving his country and even playing football while stationed in Japan. After completing his service, he returned to school at Henderson State Teachers College—where he met the love of his life, Roxie Roberts. They married on July 24, 1960, beginning a partnership that would span 64 loving years.
Eddie’s career in education took him from Texarkana to Arlington, Texas, where he worked as a coach, science teacher, elementary consultant, vice principal, and ultimately the first principal of Key Elementary School. His leadership shaped countless young lives, and his gentle guidance and trademark integrity earned him the respect of students, parents, and colleagues alike.
As a devoted father, Eddie took great pleasure in coaching his sons, Mike and Mark, in baseball, soccer, and football. Family always came first for him, and he was determined to pass on a legacy of love that now spans four generations.
Eddie’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. As a committed Christian and lifelong Methodist, he served on numerous committees, taught Sunday school, greeted worshippers as an usher, and even led his family to church during an ice storm—certain that worship came before comfort.
Eddie is survived by his beloved wife, Roxie Mayhugh; his sons, Mike (Lisa) Mayhugh and Mark (Stephanie) Mayhugh; his grandchildren, Brandon (Meagan) Masi, Jonathan (Mikala) Teer, Alexander (Calisha) Dolan, and Graham (Alicia) Hammonds; and his great-grandchildren, Dawson Masi, Christopher Teer, Isaac Dolan, and Oliver Hammonds. He also leaves behind extended family, former students, fellow educators, and many friends who were blessed by his steady kindness and Christlike spirit.
A celebration of Eddie’s life will take place at Moore Funeral Home Chapel, located at 1219 N. Davis, Arlington, Texas, on Tuesday, June 3rd, at 11:00 AM, with visitation beginning one hour prior. Burial with military honors will follow at Moore Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Resurrection Global Methodist Church in Eddie’s honor. https://www.resurrectiongmc.com/
