Elvera (Vera) Ann Meyer Smith, 96, of Fort Worth, TX, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family members, on Thursday, July 24, 2025. Vera was born on February 25, 1929, in Bowling Green, Missouri, to Ferdinand Meyer and Laura Grote.
She married the love of her life, William Arthur Smith, on October 9, 1948, and spent the next 71 years walking through life hand-in-hand. They moved to Midland, Texas in 1949 and made Midland/Odessa their home. Vera worked as a dedicated mom and homemaker most of her life. After raising her children, she spent 10 years working at the West Texas Education Agency. In 1983 she and Bill became full-time RVers and were blessed to have traveled across the country for more than 30 years, making many friends and memories from coast to coast. Following Bill’s death in 2019, Vera continued to live in west Texas until 2022 when she relocated to Fort Worth to be near family.
Vera made the best fried chicken, cornbread, homemade rolls, and pecan pie you would ever taste. She loved a good card game, a cold glass of sweet tea, and was always ready for Rosa’s Mexican food. She will always be remembered for her smile, her loving spirit and the kindness she showed to everyone around her. She will be truly missed by her family and friends, cherishing all the good memories we shared with her.
Vera was preceded in death by her mother and father, two brothers and three sisters, and grandson, Traver Grant Smith. She leaves behind her daughter Brenda Smith and husband Radford, of Fort Worth, TX, son Bill Smith and wife Janine of Riverside, CA, grandson Colin Smith and wife Stefani of Euless, TX, granddaughter Sara Smith and husband Chris of Beaumont, CA, and great-grandchildren Madison and Dylan of Euless, TX, and Mya of Beaumont, CA. She is also survived by brother Melvin Meyer of Bowling Green, MO, as well as numerous other family members.
Vera’s family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to Bridget and Ernest Jackson of the Lone Star Residential Care Home who lovingly cared for her like family for the last six months. In addition, the dedicated staff of Holy Savior Hospice provided both medical and spiritual support to ensure she was cared for and comfortable till the very end.
There will be a private funeral Mass for Vera followed by interment at the columbarium at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Midland, TX.
