Florence Belle Bergman

Visitation will be Wednesday, March 18, 2015 from 1:00 to 1:45 pm at Moore Funeral Home. The family invites guests to join them for refreshments at this time. Graveside services will be at 2:00 pm in Moore Memorial Gardens with Reverend Kay Lancaster presiding.

Florence passed away March 5, 2015, in Fremont, California at the age of 93. She was born February 9, 1922, to Thomas G. and Blanche B. Hyslop in Taylor, Texas. She attended high school and college in Arlington, Texas, where she met James W. Upchurch. She and James were married March 28, 1941. They had four children. The family settled in San Jose, California, in 1954. James passed away in 1959.

Florence Taught in Santa Clara Unified School District for 35 years. She earned her B.A. and M.S. Degrees in Education from San Jose State University. She loved children and she loved to teach.

Florence married Carl W. Bergman, Jr. on July 28, 1966. Carl had one son who also joined the family.

Florence was an active member of Good Samaritan United Methodist Church for many years. She continued to teach as a volunteer in the English as a Second Language program there until the age of 90.

Florence is survived by one brother, L.C. Hyslop, Hurst, Texas., her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Dorothy and Dexter Betts of Arlington, Texas, her children James W. Upchurch (Angela), Los Gatos, California., Sue Chappell, Mt. Vernon, Missouri., Jeanne Tessier (Larry) Enterprise, Alabama., Thomas W. Upchurch (Frances Tshudy) Fremont, California., Patrick Bergman (Cindy), Auburn, California, 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be dearly missed.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Good Samaritan United Methodist Church in Cupertino, California, The First United Methodist Church of Arlington, Texas, or the American Cancer Society.
