Gary Mattison Jones

Gary was raised in Arlington, Texas, attending South Davis Elementary, Ousley Junior High, and he graduated from Arlington High School in 1971. He was a member of the tennis team during high school. He was active in Boy Scouts and became an Eagle Scout. In 1977 he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Texas in Denton, majoring in English. He also completed a teaching certificate from UTA in 1996.

Gary married Mary Harmon of Mineral Wells Texas in 1978. They met in Denton Texas during their college years. They were married for 47 years. The couple had 2 children, Astra Jones and Jesse Jones.

In 1996, Gary became an educator for Ft. Worth ISD. He taught ESL students for 22 years, retiring in 2018. He passed on his love of reading and language to his students.

In his spare time, Gary enjoyed playing guitar, jamming in the attic of his home with his friends. They were known as the” Gary Attics”. He passed on a love of making music to his children.

Friends and family will remember him as a loving father, grandfather, husband, and uncle.

We will remember his winning smile and sense of humor.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Kendall K. Jones and Irene Ellen Jones; brother Kendall K. Jones II.

He is survived by wife Mary E. Jones, children Astra and wife Amy Jones, Jesse and wife Monica Jones, grandson Raphael Jones; sister Susan Wadsworth and husband Rick Wadsworth, niece Alexis and nephew Trey; sister Allison Jones Allen, husband Mike Allen, nephew William Allen; and faithful dog, Sheba.
