Loyd Duwayne Counts was born April 5, 1928 in Coke County, Texas, and went to his heavenly home November 5, 2024. He was 96 years old. He was at home in Town Village, where he had resided for 10 years.
He is survived by his children, Chris Counts, Kim Cathro, her husband Alex Cathro, and their children, Nicki Cathro Steen, Nick Steen, Ryan Cathro, Leigh Ann Cathro, and great granddaughter Everly Cathro. Celebration of life will be at First Presbyterian Church, 1200 S Collins, on Monday, November 11 at
1:00 PM.
Loyd was raised in west Texas, grew up on a ranch, and left home to work in the oil fields. In 1953 he married Shirley Counts. She was finishing her music degree at TCU, so they made their home in Fort Worth.
By January of 1954, Loyd was hired on at the new GM plant in Arlington. He worked there for 30 years, retiring January 1984. He had his pilot’s license and loved to fly. He flew airfreight and worked on planes for the Coker Brothers out of Grand Prairie. He was an amazing mechanic and could fix anything. He and Shirley spent their summers in Colorado.
They had a trailer and a 4 wheel drive and stayed as long as possible every year. In 2014, he and Shirley moved into Town Village Crossing. Shirley passed that November, but Loyd stayed and became a most beloved resident. They called him “The Sheriff”. He was the go-to fix-it guy. His prowess at storytelling was remarkable. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
Loyd will always be remembered as a great father, relative, friend and colleague to all that knew and cared for him. Loyd will be truly missed by many relatives and friends, cherishing all the good memories shared with him.
