Marvin Edward DeWees 89, passed away at his home in North Richland Hills, TX on January 25, 2019. Marvin was born on March 24, 1929 in Fort Worth, TX to Charles Arthur DeWees and Callie Carver DeWees. The youngest of 11 children, Marvin was raised by his recently widowed mother in the Glen Garden area of Fort Worth. Growing up, life and livelihood revolved around Glen Garden Country Club and the game of golf, which became a lifelong passion of his and his six brothers. His father’s death in 1928, just months before he was born and at the very outset of the Depression, meant life was very challenging.
In 1950, after serving in the Navy, Marvin began working for Armor and Company, where he met a beautiful blonde, named Glynnetta. They were married in 1951 and eventually settled in east Fort Worth to raise their young family, three sons, Danny, Randy and Jay, and daughter, Marsha.
He began working for Wyatt’s Cafeterias in 1955, starting as a manager trainee and advancing to Regional Vice President during his long tenure. As a boss, Marvin had a reputation of being fair-minded and worthy of respect for his strong work ethic and expectation of excellence. He enjoyed seeing dedicated workers promoted and did all he could to advance the careers of others.
Marvin retired from Wyatt’s in 1991 when he and Glynnetta moved to Pecan Plantation, where they could play golf to their heart’s content. Marvin always made friends quickly and easily and while living at Pecan Plantation, he added a new set of golf buddies to his already long list of professional friends. In the last few years of living at Pecan, he and Glynnetta began to attend a newly planted church, Pecan Baptist, which was yet another opportunity to develop new friendships, in the context of common faith. Two more moves in recent years and his circle of friends has expanded even more.
We, his children, agree that we could not have asked for a better dad. We have always been somewhat in awe of the father he became despite never having had the opportunity to know his own father. Many would be surprised to know that Dad’s education never extended beyond the 10th grade, his keen intellect and acerbic wit suggest a man of higher education. Dad showed us that hard work and dedication were the means of professional advancement, but home was to be a haven of love and fun. The challenges of Dad’s early years shaped his outlook on life in many ways – understanding the importance of being a good neighbor and friend, always maintaining a sense of humor and valuing family ties above all others. Without doubt the greatest gift Dad gave us was his love for our mother, the absolute love of his life. Their 67-year marriage is a testament of true oneness, weathering many difficulties but never wavering in dedication.
Marvin embodied what his generation lived – love of family, a strong work ethic, faith in action and service to country. When American history references the greatest generation, Marvin Edward DeWees, is the best of representations.
