On Oct. 28, 1928, Richard was born to Floy and Powers Cozad of Wapakoneta, Ohio, where he grew up and worked on their farm. Richard went on to achieve a basketball scholarship to Texas Wesleyan University, which brought him to Fort Worth. He went on to graduate with a master's degree in business management.
Richard taught school for a short time and then went on to begin a career with General Dynamics, moving on to LTV where he retired as director of engineering administration in 1992.
Anyone who knew Richard knew he loved sports. During the time he worked at LTV, he refereed basketball around Texas. After work he still enjoyed the game on TV. Any other time you might find him planting flowers or spring vegetable garden; that was his therapy.
